If you are new to programming in the Java language, have some experience with other languages, and are familiar with things like displaying text or graphics or performing simple calculations, this tutorial could be for you. It walks through how to use the Java Platform software to create and run three common types of programs written for the Java platform—applications, applets, and servlets. You will learn how applications, applets, and servlets are similar and different, how to build a basic user interface that handles simple end user input, how to read data from and write data to files and databases, and how to send and receive data over the network. This tutorial is not comprehensive, but instead takes you on a straight and uncomplicated path through the more common programming features available in the Java platform. JSP is a part of J2EE. JSP is used to service web requests, like Servlets. Both are similar technologies. JSPs are generally used for view that is for the page, while Servlets generally are used for processing and delegating requests. There are two types of servers, web servers and app servers. JSP needs a web server like Apache Tomcat to run. The app servers like JBoss, IBM Web sphere and BEA Web logic have web servers embedded in them. So you can run JSP on them too. You can use JSP without App Servers

Java is a programming language originally developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems (which is now a subsidiary of Oracle Corporation) and released in 1995 as a core component of Sun Microsystems' java platform. The language derives much of its syntax from C and C++ but has a simpler object model and fewer low-level facilities. Java applications are typically compiled to bytecode (class file) that can run on any Java Virtual Machine (JVM) regardless of computer architecture.JSP is a part of J2EE.
